Pete and his team recently built our dream home in Diamond Beach. The whole project from start to finish was an absolute dream. There is not a nicer and more dedicated builder. His workmanship is second to none. Nothing was ever a problem. It isn't a job for him its a passion and this shows in the finished product. We didn't only gain a beautiful home we gained a friendship.

Well, we have been in the house for 18 months now and are still pinching ourselves how special it turned out. Pete and his craftsmen were fantastic and nothing was too much trouble. We became a team and have created a beautiful home with modern comforts and old world charm. The build was an exciting and wonderful journey. Special mention to Jason and Brando for the skill and care we continue to appreciate.

Pete McKinnon and his excellent team built our architecturally designed home in Gloucester in 2022. It was a big project which Pete and his team handled with total professionalism and outstanding workmanship. Pete’s skills as a builder are first class. His honesty and integrity made the whole experience an absolute joy for us and the absolute success of the project is a credit to Pete and his team. We couldn’t recommend Pete any more highly.

Pete and his team of builders plus his contractors are unbelievably good. We have contracted them to do a substantial build - indeed, our dream house. From the very first meeting we have felt like we are in the best hands When you enter into a large building contract there is always some trepidation. But the experience has been nothing but awesome. There is an obsession with quality that you don't often see in any endeavour these days and when they say something will be done - it always is. Pete drives a high expectation with his team and his contractors and he will not accept anything other than perfection. What we have also deeply appreciated is the direct communication and transparency - from the actual work to the invoicing there has never been a surprise. We would not hesitate to recommend P & L McKinnon Building to anyone - if you are wanting to build a house then check out these guys first!

We love our new home and are still pinching ourselves at how good it turned out. Nothing was too much trouble and attention to detail was awesome. We camped out a lot and got to watch it all happen. Pete, Jason and Brando are fair dinkum craftsmen. Only problem is that our champion cattle dog, Ruby, now misses her new tradie mates.

Frequently asked questions

How much do builders typically charge?

Builder costs vary widely depending on the job type and complexity. Minor repairs are generally much less than extensions, small builds or structural alterations that need foundations, framing or specialist input. Most quotes include a call‑out fee plus labour and materials, and the page shows live pricing to help you compare options.

Do builders charge call-out fees?

Call‑out fees are common and typically cover travel and an initial inspection or assessment. This fee is usually separate from hourly labour and materials, and after‑hours or weekend attendance often attracts higher rates. Ask whether a call‑out or minimum charge applies when requesting quotes.

Do builders need a licence in Australia?

Yes. Building work generally needs to be carried out by a licensed builder in every state and territory, and NSW builders are regulated by NSW Fair Trading. Builders should be able to provide their state builder/contractor licence number and show appropriate insurances and ABN/GST registration. In Victoria, domestic building insurance is required above a state threshold for certain contracts.
