I can’t recommend Bruff highly enough … As committee chairman of a small townhouse complex, realise a number of our residents are mostly working people, with limited financial resources to call on. So the decision to get the outside of our 15 year old buildings painted, wasn’t taken lightly. We therefore spent quite some time choosing a contractor and looked carefully at all of the quotes. And while Bruff wasn’t the cheapest, their spec’ and pro-active approach …along with time taken to answer our numerous questions … while trying ensure we would get the service we needed. Finally decided us in their favour. When it came to the job, we had a couple of pre-work meetings with the Supervisor, Richard. Discussing issues like colour, finish and access to all areas … again, we had every opportunity to choose what we wanted. Along with reassurances they could be as flexible as was necessary. When they came to start, their first task was cleaning and general prep’ of the surfaces. Along with bringing equipment such as ladders, scaffold and other staging. The prep’ was very thorough. And included filling cracks or holes in the walls … A couple of our residents had requests in regard to the timing of getting their places painted. Involving the fitting of a couple of A/C inverters on the outside wall. Despite interrupting their original planned sequence, they dealt with this request, really well … Their team-leader, Mick was brilliant. Always outgoing and friendly. He kept his team on-point with little drama. And answered any questions we had, patiently. In respect of the team themselves, they were clearly well experienced professionals, who got on with their jobs, rain or shine … The standard of work was perennially high. And while masking off where necessary, any unmasked lines were always straight and accurate. Additionally, they always used cloths and covers to catch any drips … With a commitment towards the best finish possible, one of the guys even knocked out a dent in of one of the garage doors … After asking for feedback from the other residents, when work was still in progress. Then again when complete, the consensus was really positive. We always knew that the costs involved getting our seven townhouse, would be relatively high. Nevertheless, we felt the job provided by Bruff, constituted really good value for what we paid. Looking at the end result we couldn’t be more pleased. Clean, fresh and fully weatherproofed. Our houses looked as good as new, once more. Despite the painting having been completed. There remained one small task outstanding … in replacing the plastic end-caps fitted into the powder-coated windows shades. That prevented water ingress. Looking closely at the original end-caps, it was clear they had degraded to the point where they were crumbling. So there was no question they had to be replaced. In times past would have done this myself. But seeing as I’ve recently been instructed by my doctor to avoid climbing ladders, had to find some other way, to expedite this task. After explaining this to Richard, he happily agreed to organise for one his guys to come back a few weeks later with a ladder. And to fit the caps in the upper shades, for us … another clue, about the high standards of these guys. All in all, we were really pleased with the service provided by Bruff Painting Contractors. And have no hesitation in recommending them for their excellent service.

Painting costs & guides

Frequently asked questions

How much do painters typically charge?
Painting costs depend on the size of the job, the condition of existing surfaces, and whether the work is interior, exterior or both. Jobs requiring significant preparation such as sanding, filling or priming will generally cost more than a straightforward repaint over sound surfaces. Most painters quote per square metre or per room, with exterior work and multi-storey access typically attracting higher rates. This page shows live pricing for jobs in your area.
Do painters need a licence in Australia?
Yes. In most Australian states and territories, painters carrying out domestic work above a certain value must hold a trade-specific licence or registration. Licensing requirements and thresholds vary by jurisdiction — for example, NSW requires a Contractor Licence for painting work. A licensed painter should be able to provide their licence number on request, and you can verify it with your state's building authority.
How should I prepare my home before painters arrive?
Most painters will handle masking, drop sheets and surface preparation as part of the job, but clearing the area of furniture, wall hangings and fragile items beforehand helps the job run smoothly and may reduce your quote. For exterior work, ensure the painter has clear access to all walls and that garden beds or outdoor furniture are moved back. Discuss any specific concerns like lead paint, mould or moisture damage before work begins so the painter can plan accordingly.
