After contacting numerous carpenters and builders and trying to find someone who could get on with the work. James was the only qualified carpenter that actually listened to what we could afford and time frames and what we were trying to achieve rather than just thinking we must have endless funds to build a granny flat in a shed for my Dad. James fitted out framing for all internal walls, framing around windows and for new doors and ceiling battens fitting this work in amongst his other jobs and was not only fast but professional and considerate. Would highly recommend James and will be asking him to do some other jobs coming up next.

Carpentry costs & guides

Frequently asked questions

How much do carpenters typically charge?
Carpentry costs vary widely depending on the job. Simple trim or door hanging is usually less than internal framing, small outdoor structures or timber repairs that require more labour and materials. Most carpenters charge a call-out fee plus an hourly labour rate, with after-hours work attracting higher rates; this page shows live local pricing to help you compare quotes.
Do carpenters charge call-out fees?
Call-out fees are common and typically cover travel and the initial assessment. These fees are usually charged separately from hourly labour and materials. After-hours attendance is often charged at a higher rate, so confirm any call-out or minimum fees when requesting quotes.
Do carpenters need a licence in Australia?
Yes. Carpentry work is generally required to be carried out by a licensed tradesperson in every Australian state and territory. In NSW, licences are administered by Building Commission NSW (formerly NSW Fair Trading). You should expect providers to display a valid state building or trade licence on quotes and advertising, and to hold an ABN, public liability insurance and industry memberships such as HIA or Master Builders.
Is James Clifford Carpentry licensed?
Yes. James Clifford Carpentry currently shows an active trade licence on SureQuote.
