I can’t speak highly enough of Karl and the quality of work he produces. Our project was a complete renovation and Karl finished it to an extremely high standard, to budget and well within the time frame given. Karl takes any issues personally and worked extremely hard to make sure that we were satisfied with the solutions proposed. He is an excellent communicator and we always felt very well-informed about the progress of our job. He takes his contractual commitments seriously and documents everything so we were always certain exactly what we were paying for. Initially we had thought of employing separate contractors and managing the project ourselves, but after hearing various nightmare stories we are so glad we didn’t do this. Karl is in fact an excellent project manager. When he used subcontractors, they were always very carefully chosen, professional and courteous. Additionally, Karl watches his subcontractors like a hawk to make sure the job is done to his high standards and that nothing is damaged. Karl himself is a very skilled carpenter and we had various smaller carpentry jobs that required creative solutions. He was able to complete all of these in an innovative and surprisingly quick manner. It’s testament to the quality Karl’s work that after five months of full-time demolition and construction, there were only two or three very minor issues that needed attending to and Karl fixed these up immediately. This is in stark contrast to many building stories I’ve heard, where homeowners have faced months of fiddly tasks to properly finish the job after the builders have left. Karl took protecting the completed areas of the house very seriously (for example, he never wore his shoes on the new floor) and left the house extremely clean. Finally, it may not be the most important thing in a builder but I can honestly say that Karl is a lovely person. It was always a pleasure to talk to him and despite my own ineptitude at handyman tasks, I never felt patronised by him (unlike many tradespeople I’ve dealt with in the past). He always took care to explain things in terms that I could understand. I have no hesitation in recommending Karl for any building job, big or small. He could well be the best builder in Sydney.

I feel fortunate to have found Karl to complete carpentry work on my Sydney terrace, upgrading the balcony's hardwood beams and decking and replacing the weatherboard cladding on the attic dormers. Karl has a lifetime's knowledge and experience but it's his conscientiousness and attention to detail that are the real stand-out qualities. He literally approaches his work as if it's for his own place. You really couldn't ask for more and I'm looking forward to engaging Karl again for future works.

The staircase on the Victorian terrace house is over 100 years old. The staircase was creaking and moving whenever someone walked on it. Karl repaired it and made it feel like new. He replaced all the balusters and handrail and some treads. He reinforced the old parts and secured everything in its proper place. A very nice sample of carpentry skill.

We had a number of jobs that needed doing on our house including fixing a water damaged ceiling, several new doors, decking repair and various other carpentry tasks. Karl provided a quote and a good timescale for completion which we accepted. He executed the work meticulously, to a high standard, to budget and on time. Unlike some other contractors I have experienced, he started when he said he would, and dedicated himself to our project full time every day until it was completed. I wholeheartedly recommend him.

Karl is not only a top quality carpenter/builder, he is a craftsman who takes care in his work and genuinely cares for his clients. We gave Karl some tricky jobs, including finishing four skylights that had not been completed properly and access was difficult. Karl worked his way around the issues and now our house looks awesome inside. Outside, we had two tricky cabinets to build. Half a dozen neighbours have told us that we now have the best looking bin tidy in the neighbourhood! Karl is highly recommended!

Karl did a wonderful job on re-building two balconies on our terrace house. The balconies aren’t heritage and were to replace older timber balconies that needed a complete re-building. Karl talked in detail about how he would approach the job, sent us a quote and contract, all in good time. We felt that he explained everything very clearly and with care. He had to have scaffolding erected which guaranteed safety. The demolition of the old balconies and the removal of all the timbers was done with no fuss. He took great care with the building work which had to take into account council regulations which had changed since the original balconies were built. The two new balconies have made all the difference to the back of our terrace. They look fabulous. Thank you, Karl!

Carpentry costs & guides

Frequently asked questions

How much do carpenters typically charge?
Carpentry costs vary widely depending on the job. Simple trim or door hanging is usually less than internal framing, small outdoor structures or timber repairs that require more labour and materials. Most carpenters charge a call-out fee plus an hourly labour rate, with after-hours work attracting higher rates; this page shows live local pricing to help you compare quotes.
Do carpenters charge call-out fees?
Call-out fees are common and typically cover travel and the initial assessment. These fees are usually charged separately from hourly labour and materials. After-hours attendance is often charged at a higher rate, so confirm any call-out or minimum fees when requesting quotes.
Do carpenters need a licence in Australia?
Yes. Carpentry work is generally required to be carried out by a licensed tradesperson in every Australian state and territory. In NSW, licences are administered by Building Commission NSW (formerly NSW Fair Trading). You should expect providers to display a valid state building or trade licence on quotes and advertising, and to hold an ABN, public liability insurance and industry memberships such as HIA or Master Builders.
Does Advanced Craft Carpentry have a verified ABN?
Yes. Advanced Craft Carpentry has completed ABN verification on SureQuote.
How do I get a quote from Advanced Craft Carpentry?
Advanced Craft Carpentry lists phone or through their website on this profile, so you can contact them directly for pricing and availability. Share a short scope and photos to get a faster quote.
