Very informative website. The free Final Inspection Checklist was extremely helpful and easy to follow. I live interstate so I couldn't use the building broker service, however it sounds like a fantastic idea. It would have saved me a lot of time and hassle.

The Building Inspection Checklist: FINAL INSPECTION BEFORE SETTLEMENT CHECKLIST was invaluable as it was clear and simple and ensured that the user used it as a final checklist before settlement only after due diligence was carried out by having a builder and pest exterminator inspect the property. The list took the awkwardness out of checking all the details of the building which could affect the amenity of living in the home. Taps, latches, locks, working windows and blinds and other vital items were able to be checked off systematically. It was a valuable tool for a first home buyer.

Thanks BuildSearch, the PDF of Pre-Completion-Inspection-Checklist was very useful on my son's first building inspection of a new townhouse. The attached notes on what to look for was very relevant.

Frequently asked questions

How much do building inspectors typically charge?
Costs vary depending on the type of inspection, property size, report detail and travel required. Many building inspectors charge an hourly rate plus a call-out fee, with higher rates for after-hours attendance. This page shows live pricing to help you compare quotes.
Do building inspectors charge call-out fees?
Yes — many building inspectors charge a call-out fee to attend and assess a property. That fee typically covers travel and the initial assessment and is separate from the hourly rate and any report costs. It's sensible to confirm any call-out or minimum charges when requesting quotes.
Do building inspectors need a licence in Australia?
Yes. Building inspection and certifying work generally needs to be carried out by a licensed or registered building inspector or certifier under state and territory rules. In New South Wales the responsible authority is the NSW Building Commission (formerly NSW Fair Trading). Look for providers who display valid state registration, an ABN with GST registration and appropriate public liability and professional indemnity insurance.
