Michael and his team just finished an amazing bathroom/laundry upgrade for me. I have two sinks in my guest bathroom/laundry room and asked for them to convert one sink to a shower, which they executed in time and within my budget. The initial communication was easy and professional and I was promptly presented with designs and a quote. I am so delighted with the outcome and turnaround and will surely hire them again for my future projects.

I had an initial consultation with Michael to see about renovating and extending a home we recently purchased. Michael explained his process which initially seemed a bit over the top, when compared to other quotes we sought - we learned to appreciate how much value his feasibility study can provide versus others who literally hand wave and with experience will give a quote. Thanks to his consult, we realised we would probably be better served if we waited for a bit more money to come in before engaging his services. I look forward working with Michael, especially as he is a 'one stop shop' versus other players in the market who will do A but not B and we just don't have time to go picking further tradespeople for small things. We much rather his approach where he organises and make sure everything happens. We'll be in touch Michael, once the extra money is saved up!

From the first meeting we had with Michael, it was clear to us he is a true professional and trustworthy. We knew that if we go ahead with Michael it’s going be a stress free renovation. However, due to the lack of time we had to renovate, we went ahead with a different builder that already did a couple of renovations in the building (also knew the building manager, worked with starta, etc). For peace of mind, great service and competitive quote - go ahead with Michael.

We had the pleasure to meet with Michael (Harich) for a bathroom renovation. Michael was very helpful in guiding us giving shape and clarity to our plan. He clearly communicates what the next steps are, and if we are unable to decide on a particular stage of the project, they (Refresh) are flexible enough to listen to you and alter the plans for the next steps, as it suited us. Appreciated Michael's friendly, frank and professional communication and engagement with us. -Vish, Winston Hills, Sydney

We approached Michael and his team to do a small renovation for us. Communication was excellent from the very beginning, and everyone was very professional. They endeavour to respond in a timely manner and explain the whole process very clearly. I believe the quote we received was very good value, given the increase in prices since COVID. I would definitely recommend them, and we will use them for any future projects.

Home Building costs & guides

Frequently asked questions

How much do builders typically charge?

Builder costs vary widely depending on the job type and complexity. Minor repairs are generally much less than extensions, small builds or structural alterations that need foundations, framing or specialist input. Most quotes include a call‑out fee plus labour and materials, and the page shows live pricing to help you compare options.

Do builders charge call-out fees?

Call‑out fees are common and typically cover travel and an initial inspection or assessment. This fee is usually separate from hourly labour and materials, and after‑hours or weekend attendance often attracts higher rates. Ask whether a call‑out or minimum charge applies when requesting quotes.

Do builders need a licence in Australia?

Yes. Building work generally needs to be carried out by a licensed builder in every state and territory, and NSW builders are regulated by NSW Fair Trading. Builders should be able to provide their state builder/contractor licence number and show appropriate insurances and ABN/GST registration. In Victoria, domestic building insurance is required above a state threshold for certain contracts.
