Exceptional knowledge about trees, environment, legislation and policy. Mark, the AQF Level 5 arborist who attended the property, provided a clear and balanced report outlining how environmental values and policy often fail to align in urban tree management. His observations highlighted the risks of indiscriminate canopy reduction while remaining measured and professional in a way that supports constructive dialogue.

Mark Hartley was quite easily the best arborist I have worked with in his capacity as an expert witness in the Land and Environment Court. After our initial consultation on one matter Mark was kind enough to inform us where his services would not be beneficial to the client's case and saved that client a substantial amount of money. Mark is unique given the combination of commercial acumen, technical expertise and professional reputation as a respected expert in the Land and Environment Court. It was fantastic working with you Mark!

We used Mark Hartley as an arboricultural expert to advise us in a legal matter for one of our clients. Mark's knowledge of his field and the relevant literature is extremely impressive, and he was able to ensure that we were armed with all the necessary information, which he explained in an accessible way. Morgan Stephenson and Mark's other support staff are extremely helpful and professional. Based on our experience, we would heartily recommend the Arborist Network to anyone who requires arboricultural consulting services.

Mark Hartley is the best practical arborist in Australia. In order to achieve a positive result for our DA Mark literally was in the trenches and covered in dirt to ensure that critical trees were accurately assessed, their roots mapped and their prospects of survival methodically estimated. With his passion for trees and his ability to challenge outdated standards and norms we successfully achieved a result far beyond our expectations. 2 years after Mark had advocated care for two trees that council stated would not survive, the trees are thriving.

Arborist costs & guides

Frequently asked questions

How much do arborists typically charge?
Arborist costs vary widely depending on the type and scale of work. Factors such as tree size and species, site access, whether removal and stump grinding are needed, required equipment and disposal all affect the total. Most quotes separate a call-out component from labour and materials, and after-hours or emergency jobs generally attract higher rates. The live pricing on this page shows current estimates for different job types.
Do arborists charge call-out fees?
Many arborists charge a call-out fee to attend and assess the job, which is usually separate from labour and materials. That fee typically covers travel and the initial site inspection, and smaller or remote jobs may be subject to a minimum charge. It's worth confirming whether a call-out fee is included in any quote you receive.
When do arborists need a licence?
Arborists often need registration or specific contractor credentials for higher-risk, large-scale or regulated tree work. Where the scope overlaps with regulated building or contractor work, providers should hold a valid state contractor or builder credential and comply with local council permit requirements for protected trees. For higher‑risk tasks, look for evidence of public liability insurance, documented work-at-heights controls and SWMS.
How do I get a quote from Arborist Network?
