  2. 2VIC · You do not need a registered builder for a contract just for wall or floor tiling, whatever it costs.
  3. 3QLD · Licence needed from: Wall and floor tiling has its own licence class. Smaller jobs inside a bigger licensed contract still need a licence.
  4. 4SA · Licence needed from: Staff employed by a licensed business need no licence of their own.
  5. 5WA · Licence needed from: Only permit work in the main populated areas needs a registered builder. A tiler working for one needs no registration.
  6. 6TAS · Licence needed from: Replacing tiles with the same or similar tiles is low-risk work. Tiling within a kitchen, bathroom or laundry renovation can need a licensed builder.
  7. 7NT · Licence needed from: Registration covers a new home or an extension that adds floor area. It also covers a garage, carport or retaining wall built with it.
  8. 8VIC · A contract just for wall or floor tiling does not get these protections. A bigger building job that includes it does.
  9. 9NSW · Deposit cap: Applies to jobs over $5,000. The cap does not apply to smaller jobs.
  10. 10SA · Deposit cap: Applies only to contracts of $20,000 or more. Smaller jobs have no deposit limit.
  11. 11WA · Deposit cap: This limit applies to jobs that cost more than $7,500 and less than $500,000.
  12. 12NT · Deposit cap: Applies only to a registered builder's contract of $25,000 or more. It covers a new house, an extension or a structure built with it.

Do tilers charge call-out fees?
Call-out fees are common to cover attendance and the initial assessment. This fee is usually separate from labour and materials, and small repairs may still attract it. After-hours or emergency visits are often charged at a higher rate, so confirm call-out and availability terms when requesting quotes.
Do tilers need a licence in Australia?
Yes. Tiling work generally requires a licensed tradesperson in all Australian states and territories, and in NSW licences are administered by NSW Fair Trading. Ask to see a valid state tiling or building licence number on quotes or invoices, and look for industry credentials such as Certificate III in Wall and Floor Tiling, a White Card, public liability insurance and an ABN with active GST registration.
