Gerard and his team recently completed a full exterior restoration and repaint of my weatherboard home in Newington. They were reliable, professional, and highly skilled throughout the process. The house had some real issues—rotting weatherboards, windowsills, and corner sections that needed attention well beyond a standard paint job. Gerard’s team tackled each of these with care and did proper restoration work, not just patch-ups. They took the time to strip the boards back to bare wood, repair damaged areas, and prepare the surfaces properly before repainting. They also took initiative on a number of small but important tasks, like fixing a side gate and rebuilding sections of trim—without being asked and without extra fuss. That kind of attention to detail really stood out. Most importantly, working with Gerard and his team was easy and straightforward. He communicated clearly, was on time and on budget, and clearly takes pride in delivering a high-quality result. If you’re looking to restore a weatherboard home properly, I’d be happy to recommend Gerard and his team.

Gerard and his team's do fantastic work. They painted my house a few years ago and recently my kitchen/dining area. The quality of work is high and everyone on the team genuinely seems to care about the work they're doing. To top it off Gerard charges fairly for his work.

Gerard and his team did a great job painting the 2nd floor at my place, all of which was done on scaffolding that he supplied. Gerard also identified some other issues up there and helped out and rectified them without blowing out my budget. Nothing was too much trouble. Great quality and above all very neat and tidy workmanship. I really recommend them.

Painting costs & guides

Frequently asked questions

How much do painters typically charge?
Painting costs depend on the size of the job, the condition of existing surfaces, and whether the work is interior, exterior or both. Jobs requiring significant preparation such as sanding, filling or priming will generally cost more than a straightforward repaint over sound surfaces. Most painters quote per square metre or per room, with exterior work and multi-storey access typically attracting higher rates. This page shows live pricing for jobs in your area.
Do painters need a licence in Australia?
Yes. In most Australian states and territories, painters carrying out domestic work above a certain value must hold a trade-specific licence or registration. Licensing requirements and thresholds vary by jurisdiction — for example, NSW requires a Contractor Licence for painting work. A licensed painter should be able to provide their licence number on request, and you can verify it with your state's building authority.
How should I prepare my home before painters arrive?
Most painters will handle masking, drop sheets and surface preparation as part of the job, but clearing the area of furniture, wall hangings and fragile items beforehand helps the job run smoothly and may reduce your quote. For exterior work, ensure the painter has clear access to all walls and that garden beds or outdoor furniture are moved back. Discuss any specific concerns like lead paint, mould or moisture damage before work begins so the painter can plan accordingly.
How do I get a quote from Gerard Vanderkley Painter and Decorator?
