Doug at Country Painting did a stellar job of our 100 year old home in Katoomba. The paint was in very poor shape but his preparation was meticulous and the end result is just amazing. He and his offsider Sean were great to have around - cheerful and friendly, which over several weeks of prep and painting really makes a difference. We would thoroughly recommend Country Painting to all Blue Mountains residents, especially those with weatherboard homes as Doug knows how to treat them right. Thanks again Doug and Sean!

Doug and his team were excellent. Friendly, no job too complex. Catered for our family and our busy schedule. I would recommend Doug and his team for major and minor internal and external jobs.

Doug Sean Harry & Ollie - we can’t thank you enough. You’ve brought our mountains cottage back to life. The task was huge - and you’ve taken great care every single step of the way. You clearly enjoy what you do - and was a pleasure having you guys in our home. Such a merry positive vibe amongst you and ‘job site’ always cleaned up/packed away respectfully. Attention to all detail - and safety. True gentlemen. Doug from the start took the time to understand what we wanted and gave great advice too - keeping us informed and ensuring we were satisfied with all, along the way. We felt at ease from the start and knew we had found the right guys. We’ll miss having you around the home. Thank you Doug & fellas - Magical hands - great guys. The cottage is gleaming, all thanks to you 🏡 Cannot recommend you highly enough. Cheers guys 🙇‍♀️ Di & Muz 😇

Painting costs & guides

Frequently asked questions

How much do painters typically charge?
Painting costs depend on the size of the job, the condition of existing surfaces, and whether the work is interior, exterior or both. Jobs requiring significant preparation such as sanding, filling or priming will generally cost more than a straightforward repaint over sound surfaces. Most painters quote per square metre or per room, with exterior work and multi-storey access typically attracting higher rates. This page shows live pricing for jobs in your area.
Do painters need a licence in Australia?
Yes. In most Australian states and territories, painters carrying out domestic work above a certain value must hold a trade-specific licence or registration. Licensing requirements and thresholds vary by jurisdiction — for example, NSW requires a Contractor Licence for painting work. A licensed painter should be able to provide their licence number on request, and you can verify it with your state's building authority.
How should I prepare my home before painters arrive?
Most painters will handle masking, drop sheets and surface preparation as part of the job, but clearing the area of furniture, wall hangings and fragile items beforehand helps the job run smoothly and may reduce your quote. For exterior work, ensure the painter has clear access to all walls and that garden beds or outdoor furniture are moved back. Discuss any specific concerns like lead paint, mould or moisture damage before work begins so the painter can plan accordingly.
