After searching high and low, and getting multiple quotes, thankfully, I finally found Dylan 😀 Other people had said we would need to get rid of the leadlight panels in our front window and replace with one plain glass panel x 3! And nobody else had the skillset required to do the carpentry repairs required for the canopy over the window. Dylan spent two weeks painstakingly restoring our front leadlight window, and the canopy, as well as an original sash window at the side of our house. New timber where needed, new hardware, new glass in the sash window, the leadlight panels restored where needed, and fully painted! He's an absolute gem, and so incredibly skilled. In a time when most people want you to rip things out, it's a delight to find unique tradespeople so highly skilled. And he's a lovely person to have around! Can't recommend him more!

I have 50-year-old wooden bay sash windows. They were very rotten with large areas of spongy wood. They had been repaired a few times over the last 20 years. Tradesman always did a ‘bog and paint’ solution which then failed after a few years. I was facing a huge bill to completely replace the rotten windows. Thank goodness I found Dylan from Retro Windows. I only wish I had found him years ago! Dylan painstakingly cut out and custom re-built each little piece of wood until the entire window was as good as new. He also fitted Colourbond to help protect the new wood from future water damage. In addition to the wood rot, he fixed the windows that were not moving up and down properly. He has done a beautiful job! The windows work and look absolutely fantastic. I could not be happier. If you’re looking for a reliable and patient craftsman who takes great care and pride in his work and does the job properly, you can’t get any better than Dylan from Retro Windows. I highly recommend him!

Dylan is the real deal - a true expert craftsman, both as a carpenter and a glazier. His attention to detail is off the charts, and his skill in restoring and repairing is second to none. He worked on several windows for us that were completely rotten, and somehow brought them back to their original glory + beautifully restored, functional, and finished to perfection. You can tell Dylan takes real pride in his work, and it shows in every detail. We couldn’t be happier with the result and would recommend him to anyone looking for a meticulous, highly skilled professional.

We had Dylan repair multiple timber windows which were rotten and warped due to age and water damage. Dylan was fantastic to work with! He was professional, courteous, and very responsive at all times. He came up with multiple options and talked us through what these would look like and costs to help us come up with the best option. When getting the job done, Dylan was punctual, tidy and organised despite the size of the task. The windows came out great and we would not hesitate to recommend Dylan and use him again in the future.

Frequently asked questions

How much do carpenters typically charge?
Carpentry costs vary widely depending on the job. Simple trim or door hanging is usually less than internal framing, small outdoor structures or timber repairs that require more labour and materials. Most carpenters charge a call-out fee plus an hourly labour rate, with after-hours work attracting higher rates; this page shows live local pricing to help you compare quotes.
Do carpenters charge call-out fees?
Call-out fees are common and typically cover travel and the initial assessment. These fees are usually charged separately from hourly labour and materials. After-hours attendance is often charged at a higher rate, so confirm any call-out or minimum fees when requesting quotes.
Do carpenters need a licence in Australia?
Yes. Carpentry work is generally required to be carried out by a licensed tradesperson in every Australian state and territory. In NSW, licences are administered by Building Commission NSW (formerly NSW Fair Trading). You should expect providers to display a valid state building or trade licence on quotes and advertising, and to hold an ABN, public liability insurance and industry memberships such as HIA or Master Builders.
