Grateful doesn’t even begin to cover it. Tom and the team at 35 Degrees together with Silas from SOS Architecture have completely reimagined our home with a renovation that is beyond expectations. From the outset, we wanted a home that respected what was already there, but brought in contemporary design and infrastructure, energy-efficiency, and was adaptable for the years ahead. The 35 Degrees team embraced that vision wholeheartedly. They not only met timeline and budget, they delivered something that is practical and beautiful, retaining the feel of the original home but better in every way. The renovation has opened the house to the garden, brought in generous natural light and fresh air, and turned it into a space that will grow with our family’s needs. What stood out just as much as the final result was the experience of getting there. Clear communication, outstanding planning, and a level of trust and professionalism that made the entire process feel calm and collaborative. We’re thrilled with the outcome and genuinely glad it was this team who brought it to life.

We are thrilled with our home built by 35 Degrees. The build process was a breeze with a team that are professional, genuine, honest and easy to communicate with. We felt informed throughout the process, from regular updates on the project management portal to many site visits, including at points where we had particular interest. The team was transparent about any unexpected issues which were addressed promptly. The worksite was also kept immaculate throughout the entire build. Having lived in our home for over 12 months, we are very happy with the quality of the build. The high quality standard inclusions and attention to detail during construction ensures our home is warm in winter and cool in summer. It performs exactly as it should and is a dream to live in. Our home was completed smoothly, on time, on budget and is a joy to live in - we couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

For ten years we've been living in our dream house, soaking up the northern sunlight and benefiting from the smart design and quality build delivered by Tom Henderson and his team at 35 Degrees. The house has performed magnificently, keeping us comfortable all year round. We love the use of space, clean lines, and the quiet and security of a solidly built house. It is beautiful too, with a mix of building materials and colours, and connections to the garden, streetscape and sky. Tom made the building process easy for us to navigate. We had absolute trust in him, which was borne out as he delivered on time and on budget, and was a pleasure to deal with. Due to a family move interstate, we put our beloved home on the market. It attracted a whirlwind of interest and sold within days. We will miss this place, and we are grateful to have had the opportunity to live here. It is a house like no other.

35 Degrees built our house as a knock-down and rebuild in 2017. Tom and his staff were pleasant to deal with, were up front and transparent about the building process and which steps would happen next and kept us well briefed on progress (including regular visits to see how the house was coming along). The quality of workmanship was consistently excellent and six years after moving in we have not had a single concern in relation to the build. The house performs as it was designed and built to do and met all the aspirations we had in terms of thermal management and otherwise. Our experience with 35 Degrees was entirely satisfying.

Every so often I experience a soul-deep smile as I appreciate the great house 35 Degrees built for us in 2019. We got estimates or quotes from four builders before signing with 35 Degrees. Although 35 Degrees’ price was not the cheapest quote, Tom sat down with us at the beginning of the process to ensure he had a thorough understanding of our brief. Items that were extra inclusions for some other builders were standard inclusions for Tom. This gave us confidence in 35 Degrees which paid off during the project where it was clear Tom and his team were always striving to achieve our brief. Tom and his team were helpful and accommodating throughout the build when issues arose. 35 Degrees delivered the keys to our wonderful family home on time and on budget! 35 Degrees are builders with excellent skill and integrity. I recommend them to anyone looking to build an energy efficient, good quality home in Canberra.

Our goal was a healthy, comfortable home with lots of light that used connection to the outdoors to create spaciousness. We wanted a house for 2 adults and 2 kids, who may live there until they complete university. We wanted to be able to comfortably accommodate a regular stream of interstate visitors and allow frequent entertaining with minimal fuss. We wanted to feel good at home: to feel safe and have privacy that didn’t impede upon having lots of light and connection to the outdoors; where keeping things neat and tidy didn’t feel like a constant battle - to not be precious about things getting knocked about, feel comfortable having kids of all ages around (easy to be baby friendly); and to grow all our herbs and some vegetables. We wanted a home where we could age in place and accommodate a multi-generational family. Most of all we wanted a smart, thermally-efficient home that was comfortable through all the Canberra seasons and the challenges of a changing climate. 35 degrees were involved from very early on in the design process and were able to contribute enormously given their extensive experience in building sustainable, thermally-efficient homes in Canberra. Tom Henderson from 35 degrees worked with our architect to deliver a home that met and exceeded our expectations. We were overseas while the house was being built and 35 degrees managed this with an app that allowed us to see progress on the house and quickly address anything that required our attention. The communication from 35 degrees was excellent. We highly recommend Tom and his team.

Carpentry costs & guides

Frequently asked questions

How much do carpenters typically charge?
Carpentry costs vary widely depending on the job. Simple trim or door hanging is usually less than internal framing, small outdoor structures or timber repairs that require more labour and materials. Most carpenters charge a call-out fee plus an hourly labour rate, with after-hours work attracting higher rates; this page shows live local pricing to help you compare quotes.
Do carpenters charge call-out fees?
Call-out fees are common and typically cover travel and the initial assessment. These fees are usually charged separately from hourly labour and materials. After-hours attendance is often charged at a higher rate, so confirm any call-out or minimum fees when requesting quotes.
Do carpenters need a licence in Australia?
Yes. Carpentry work is generally required to be carried out by a licensed tradesperson in every Australian state and territory. In NSW, licences are administered by Building Commission NSW (formerly NSW Fair Trading). You should expect providers to display a valid state building or trade licence on quotes and advertising, and to hold an ABN, public liability insurance and industry memberships such as HIA or Master Builders.
